Mother and Son Parting

Farewell My Stripling Warrior, by Del Parson

This image was inspired by my wife and son when he was leaving on his mission. We were at the airport saying our good-byes, and I watched him as he hugged my wife. She was hanging on, having a very hard time letting him go, and he was hugging her, but he was looking beyond her — toward the airplane. He was obviously ready to go. The expression on her face was one of trepidation. It was as if she were asking herself, "Have I prepared him for this? Have I done all I could?" While his expression was one of eager determination. He had been preparing so long for this and he was ready to get started.
That moment made me think of the story of the Stripling Warriors. Those two thousand young men had never fought before. They had no idea what they were up against, or what to expect going into battle against the Lamanites, but that didn't matter to them. They were prepared in spirit and in faith. They knew that the things their mothers had taught them were true, and they were willing to march into the unknown, with their strength and courage coming from their faith. I think about those young men and their resolve to defend their families and their homes. They went forth with bravery and they succeeded. Then I think about their mothers. I know how worried and afraid they must have been. That's what moms do. They worry and they wonder if they have prepared their sons. That is really the feeling I wanted to portray in this painting.

Blessed Are Those Who Come Unto Me

Christ and Children from around the World, by Del Parson, © 1997 IRI

But Jesus said, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 19:14

And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in my name, or ye can in nowise receive these things. – 3rd Nephi 11:37

And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God. – 3rd Nephi 11:38

Jesus at the Door

Jesus at the Door, by Del Parson, © IRI

Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me. " (Revelation 3:20).  I like the symbology that we have to be listening and then take action to let Jesus in. Throughout the Scriptures the phrase "hearken and obey" is used to signify both respectful listening and following the counsel given. D&C 1:1 states "Hearken, O ye people of my church, saith the voice of him who dwells on high, and whose eyes are upon all men; yea, verily I say: hearken ye people from afar; and ye that are upon the islands of the sea, listen together."

Jesus wants everyone to believe in Him and receive His blessings. "And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." (1 Samuel 15:22). We must hearken and obey.  He is ready and waiting to help everyone. He gives people the opportunity to learn about Him and accept His teachings. Those who have faith in Jesus can open the door to Him by repenting, being baptized, and living righteously. Faithful followers will receive the great blessing of life eternal.

Summary

Jesus stands at the door ready to help us, but we need to invite Him into our lives. By having faith in Him, repenting, being baptized, and following His commandments, we open the door to the great blessing of eternal life with Him and Heavenly Father.
